Background of the study
Traditional music is a vital cultural expression that influences many aspects of language, including phonetic production. Among the Igbo in Owerri, traditional musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and intonation are deeply intertwined with everyday speech (Chinwe, 2023). This study assesses how exposure to traditional music influences the phonetic production of Igbo speakers. It examines whether rhythmic and melodic patterns in traditional songs affect the pitch, stress, and overall articulation of spoken Igbo (Ibrahim, 2024). By comparing speech samples from individuals actively engaged in traditional music with those less exposed, the study aims to identify acoustic variations attributable to musical influence. Such influences may reinforce certain prosodic features, enhancing expressiveness and cultural identity. Moreover, understanding these effects can aid in developing culturally informed language teaching strategies and contribute to preserving the rich musical and linguistic heritage of the Igbo people (Adeniyi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite anecdotal evidence of music’s influence on speech, there is little empirical research on how traditional music affects phonetic production among the Igbo in Owerri. The absence of systematic acoustic studies leaves a gap in understanding the interplay between musical exposure and speech patterns (Okoro, 2023). This lack of data hampers the development of language teaching methodologies that incorporate cultural elements. Inconsistent phonetic patterns may lead to variations in speech clarity and communication effectiveness. This study addresses these gaps by providing a comprehensive assessment of the influence of traditional music on phonetic production among Igbo speakers, offering insights into how cultural practices shape linguistic expression.
